Hello everyone -
just joined the forum today - I wanted to know if anyone here has ever heard of or seen a Honda GOLDWING being raced before? I have an 82 1100 standard that I thought might make a solid 1/4 mile bike just for getting my feet wet racing. I know, who in their right mind would want to race a big ol' heavy goldwing right? Thanks everyone - |

I think it would be a great bracket bike. Get an air shifter and have fun.

A strange choice but like Riceburner said, would make a good bracket bike.
Probably the wings first competition outing was on the second Saturday of September in 75.
The event was the Brighton Speed Trials in the southern UK.
The bike had been loaned to the motorcycle press for evaluation prior to it being released in the UK.
It placed first in its class and a month later, I had the pleasure of riding the bike when the jurno that was testing it turned up at a world land speed records meeting at Elvington near York.
I only rode the bike on the perimiter track and was told not to break it.
The bike was heavy and as smooth as silk. The only thing I could fault it on was the gearbox sounded a little clunky.
Bracket race it and have fun.
Sam.

Thanks Sam and again thanks Steve,
I appreciate you two taking the time to reply...... I've been riding for 30+ years and now have 2 children I would like to expose to motorcycles on the track as opposed to the street....... I've personally never raced but have always wanted to..... As far as getting involved in motorcycle bracket racing, I'm assuming the best way is to contact local tracks to see if they offer motorcycle bracket racing and then go from there. Any other advice on getting involved in bracket racing would be greatly appreciated... Thanks again, KaineT edited by me - because I can't spell. lol Edited by kainet - 25 June 2009 at 9:55pm |

Hi Kaine, I've found 4 strips in Iowa and all do bikes, not sure to what extent though, you would need to ask them.
The strips are Cedar Falls, Eddyville, Rolling Thunder and Tri State.
There might be others in the 7 surounding States depending on where you live in Iowa.

Kaine, Come on over to Cordova or Byron. As for your wing You'll need to run stiffer clutch springs and take a close look at the rear end coupler they are notorious for wearing the splines down to nothing. A common mod is to find a rear end from a crashed Valkyrie or 1500/1800 wing and adapt it. An added benefit is wider rear rubber. You might look at some smoothbores and get that stock muffler off of there and look at a set of supertraps or something less restrictive. This should get you going.

Kaine I thought I had something for ya! It looks like a Suzuki Gs lock up is close. It may take an adapter ring to get it to bear properly on the pressure plate but it looks do-able. I'll look at it Monday.

If you haven't done so already, it would be wise to replace the cam timing belts. The should be replaced on a 'wing about every 35,000 miles.
Keep us updated & have FUN!!

Kainet: My friend ran his goldwing back in the early 80' I wish I could remember his times. He even left his stereo on when he was making a pass. People loved it.

Sure it is Kaine, I did away with 3 of the cylinders, coverted it to a 2 stroke and put the motor into a diferent chassis.
It's a nitrous 125 GP bike with a big bore kit (134cc), runs low 13s. See, you can have fun and race whatever you want.
Sam.

I've been riding a GL1100 for a very long time. I'm not a racer but at 62 I've done some touring. The GL1000 may well have been one of the first very successful, modern drag bikes. The GL1100 was also very successful up to the time the GSXR's came on the scene. Can you compete with the current technology? The bike certainly has a history of drag racing.

I drag race but not my wing. Here is what Honda should have made them look like. IMO
This is my '76 Wing Super Sport.
