    Posted: 03 May 2009 at 1:31pm

The motorcycle performance world lost an icon Saturday May 2.  My father, Bill Hahn, lost his battle with lung cancer on this day.

He is survived by grandchildren Adam and Cara, my wife Lori Hahn, and myself, Bill Hahn Jr.

Bill Hahn's career spanned four decades.  From his first work with the brand-new Honda 750 in 1969, to the most sophisticated Funnybike ever conceived, his contributions to our sport have been numerous and significant.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Bill Hahn Memorial Website fund will be accepted.  The proceeds will be used to convert Bill's extensive racing video and photograph collection to digital format and create a website.  This priceless collection features hundreds of images and many hours of video chronicling a long and exciting career.  The website will enable countless fans to enjoy Bill's genius and dedication while taking a long, fun walk down Memory Lane.  Any proceeds gathered in excess of the project cost will be donated to the Drag Racing Association of Women (DRAW), a wonderful organization who helps racers and their families in need.

If you'd like to donate, please email sales@turbosystem.com.  Your generosity will ensure that Bill's magnificent story is immortalized for all to see and enjoy!

======================================================

For the rest of this thread, I'd love to see comments and suggestions on how we could make the Bill Hahn website the best it can be.  Of course, donations of content are welcomed, and all contributors will be acknowledged.

If you have a fun story or good memory of Bill you'd like to share in this thread, we'd be most appreciative.

Thank you everyone for the kindness,
Bill Hahn Jr.

Very sad to hear this. My deepest sympathy to you Bill and the entire Hahn family. One of our true pioneers is gone but his wisdom and innovation contines to live on. I'm very glad I had the few moments to chat with him in Valdosta earlier this year. Just sad.

Bill Hahn Sr was a classic  innovator whose drive helped  him  leave his  name and logo on a   sport which welcomed ,recognized and rewarded  both that breed of  man  and Bill in particular
        He was a success
His manner was one of  good humor, with a bit of a bent  toward  well used  and
appropriately aimed  sardonic  witticisms    and  rare , pointed  sarcasm  used only  in
circumstances and with people he  knew would "capiche" , use  it  to improve things  and  who would not   be  offended   That, target, during the 1970 ,80'sand early 1990s  was in many cases, yours truly   I would  never  let on, but I felt honored by it,,,and  took careful note of' every word
Sometimes,we see the word unique wrongly used  It  is  an absolute,
One cannot  be  very unique   as it implies varying levels of   uniqueness   There are no such   Unique means  "one of  a kind in the universe and humanity
or   it  could be   defined in two words"Bill Hahn"
Sincerely,
Tom Loughlin ,Jr

Bill always seemed to beat around the bush until he got the response he was looking for. I knew another man like that. His name was Elmer. Both Bill and Elmer forgotten more about making things go fast than most people will ever know.  Nice pic Steve I remember when and where. Best wishes to Jr and Family.  God Speed

It's definitely not Dad, but it's also definitely one of his bikes.  I remember that old Honda well!

Bill, My condolences to you and your family for your loss.

To answer your question... that is me, Jeff Mould, in the above photograph which was taken at Atco. And you are correct it was around 1975.   If my memory serves me right we were doing a tire change while Bill Sr was running (I think) a Honda ATP 550.  Later on we swapped out the engine on the 750 with a spare.

I had two 750's that had ATP setups on them during that time.  At that event I wasn't racing so, I volunteered my wrenching abilities.

Although I currently see Chris (FASTLANE) nearly every weekend these days I'm not surprised he didn't recognize me in the photo.... I have very little hair now, about 70 lbs heavier and aged about 35 years.

Hi Bill,

Even though it's good to hear from you and see your world touching ours again it's a shame to be under such circumstances.

It is always sad whenever a life is lost in an untimely manner and due to ill health or accident. But it is also felt by more people when that person has affected our lives in so many ways. Many have hankered after our sport to be bigger and more professional than it actually is, but the benefit of it being such a small tight knit global family is that we all feel personal loss when `one of our own' leaves us. In the case of your dad he has had such an influence on the development of our sport that it shakes our very foundations that he has now gone - who knows what the very bikes we race now would have been if it was not for his innovation and development over the years, he has left his mark on almost every class even if relative newcomers to our great sport do not realize.

And with greatness comes character, strong will, and yes sometimes an arrogance that can even affect relationships inside and outside of family life. And your dad was indeed a character....!

It' s shame that after moving into the 20th century and finally getting on to email and the internet that he had such a short time to show his latest work, but rest assured he will not be forgotten and I hope you keep up his tradition. The latest outstanding work he conducted with John Morgan and his fine team is testament to him.

I am so happy that the two of you were at least close to one another again in his final days and I know how proud he was of your achievements (as he told me) even though he always typically added some caveat at the end of every statement.....!

Anyhow, I will sign off now with my favourite memory of him. Even my marriage some 20 years ago was affected by your dad as I managed to persuade my soon to be wife that our honeymoon should be spent in Florida, around March, that co incidentally was also at the same time as Daytona Speed Week, the IHRA Bike race and the Gatornationals (although she did not know that until we arrived....). After dragging her around the various drag and bike events I persuaded her I really wanted to go and see the countryside and took a trip up to see your dad at his home. After a number of hours searching for his naturally camouflaged home (!) we parked in his drive only to be shouted at by your dad to close the goddam door and get in the house asap... My wife thought we were going to be shot, but your dad was worried that his dog would be eaten by a alligator that had taken up residence in his yard...

After that shock came the next, I had never met someone with so many TV sets, I swear you could move from room to room without missing a second of your favorite TV program....

Godspeed Bill Sr, and our condolences to you and your family at this sad time.
Ian
