Never forget the aromas of the burning rubber, fuel and sights and sounds of that place.  Every time I produce a race I am drawn back to that first day at Bowling Green remembering the excitement I felt as a participant.   Keeps me working to instill that focus of fun in all of our volunteers and race officials.

According to what the previous owner told me this one is a d & k frame also and it has a 1170 big bore kit in it. Me and a buddy are going to restore it so we can race it. I just turned 30 this year and the last time it was ran was when I was still a baby.  I'm really excited about this one cause its my first purpose built dragbike.

ED PRENTKOWSKI!!!!! I would'nt have guessed that if I lived another lifetime. That's a name LONG forgotten, at least by me. Even now I can't remember what he rode, maybe a modifyed CB550 Honda? I was thinking Jim Dodd from Muskegon area. Little story about him. Jim and I were close in points in about '74, '75. I really did not want to make the trip out to SoCal for a race so I called him to ask if he was going to go. If he would stay home, I would too. He said he was planning to go, so even though I was leading in points at that time I couldn't afford to stay home and let him maybe win the race. Bottom line, I went alllllllll the way to Cal, won the race + set a record and Jim never showed. That pretty much locked up the points for me.

YOU NORDIC RAPSCALLION!
YOU GOT IT,
SUPERCHARGED VINCENT BLACK SHADOW.
eND TO END TIRESMOKE (LOOK AT THe TIRE).
nOT JUST THUNDER, BUT CANNON FIRE CYLINDER SOUND...It could make your fillings fall out.
You who have not heard this thing run...especially a full pass...have really not ..savored a mortorsports racket..no , music. BIG BAD music...something akin to Thunderstruck by AC.DC or
Higher and Higher by the Moody Blues (a saturn 5 rocket takeoff is the keynote to that  ditty, or Locomotive Breath by Jethro Tull... The entire thing looks as though it were cut out of billet aluminum or poured into a mold. We all do a lot of  hand crafting and fabrication...but this?
The only drawback about seeing and hearing this ...THING...run...is that you might begin committing blasphemies and sacrileges and begin praying to it like a Golden Calif (or in this case, an Aluminum/Magnesium Nitro Calf ..) In that case, God would turn you into a pillar of salt..so..count your blessings. Lot's wife ignored  her charge not to look back at Sodom and Gomorrah when God freed  them...and zappo. NaCl  statuary where once stood a  chickie.
....I am nuts about this machine. In our entire run, I think we saw it 3 times..Carlsbad, LACR and ..gkw (God knows where.).. ahbe OCIR.
I am the richer for having experienced it.)
Anybody else out there see it go? YOU, ROYRACEMASTER? Bo T, the Smart Swede?.
chime in.

IFirst...First, do NOT run your motorcycle against a car..especially a top fuel car. Jeez !!!
Maybe it;s ok  19 times out of 20...but on that 20th, you will rue the day you did it if you have the opportunity to do any "rue-ing" at all.  These fellas are misbehaving...badly. We started (at GREAT expense) a series of all-motorcycle races so you wouldnt have to do this .

This scoot has a Routt-ian look (early) to it, The rider is skinny..perhaps Mr.. Welch...That is a lot of throttle grip travel our hero is overcoming with the hyperextended wrist..But who needs a top fuel bike with an on-off  1/8 th turn throttle? Nice to have some adjustability..dontcha think?   Come to think of it, perhaps that is where the smokin' tire thing came in...you just wick it up and keep it there while the tire makes an attempt to introduce itself to the blacktop.. and when it does, you get a smoothly initiated mid-course erection par excellence..with the 150 -170 mph wind holding you up the rest of the way because wheelie bars weren;t invented yet. WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
Track looks like Cecil County or Lions.
If that is Mr. Welch on there, I will assure you that nothing was beyond the realm of possibility ..and that the fella could RIDE. Even when he wasn't supposed to.
Calling Mr. Royracemaster...Calling Mr. Roy Racemaster...do you have anything to add, here  Roy?

I had the pleasure of seeing the "Barn Job" make a couple of passes at Carlsbad. Why I only stood there in awe and never took pictures is beyond me. If my memory serves me correctly it was in the late 70's,....I know it was back when we used to "heat the tire" up against the guardrail facing the announcers shack on the hill behind the launch pad.

Although portions of my recollection are somewhat faded, I do recall that it was at this same DRAGBIKE event that I first saw the Clyde Rawlings show. Those of you that were around back then know what I'm talking about when I say "show." I think that was the first time I ever saw Jack Dolan's Salt Flat bike also,.....wasn't real aggressive off the line but it really came on strong after the 1/8th! What'd he have on there for a rear sprocket, maybe 25T ?

It was the early days of campaigning my 650 Kawasaki Turbo and I remember being pitted next to Terry and Byron. After making a pass down the valley (am I the only one that felt like the top end of Carlsbad was a valley?) and Byron commented that my motor was really "screaming" through the traps. He asked what kind of RPM's I was turning and I didn't have a clue. I still have the time slip that Byron scribbled some notes on the back of while he figured my "big end RPM's for me,......little did I know that one could determine engine RPM's from MPH, primary output gear and rear tire circumference! According to Byron's calculations, I was twisting 12,748 rpm's at 151.77 mph. No wonder it sounded like it was screaming! Needless to say I soon made some gearing changes but it was still a bomb looking for a place to go off.

I miss those days,......anybody else remember the time back at Carlsbad when we used to turn left off the track on the big end, go up the hill and stop to get your handwritten time slips from the folks in the ambulance?

Wasn't the owners name Larry Grismer? (< sp?) He was a square shooter and never hard to find as he always wore a straw hat,...funny how things like that stick in your head, huh? I'm told that Carlsbad Raceway is now an industrial park or something.

Sorry for the rambling guys, but this forum has a tendancy to make my old mind young again,....if that's possible.
