Pup, Thanks, those were the best Knapp shoes you could buy, wore them every day to work. They had oil resistant soles which were good for around the service department.

Hi guys and gals, I turned 54 today. After 34 years of racing it is cool to have a place to come where I still feel like a kid. So if some of you are old farts what does that make me just a fart. Later Jerry: |

Jerry, HAPPY BIRTHDAY...... At 54 you're OK, you don't become an Old Fart until you reach 60, (depending on your size) you're just "a big fart" getting older.

Roy, You will probably be surprised at what the final bid will be..... and I doubt if it reaches reserve. I was watching Speed Channel last week, you know the show with the babe, and she was covering a motorcycle auction in Vegas I think. One of the top sellers was a restored late '60s-early '70s single engine Harley dragster (4" Avon slick era). It was NOT a Joe Smith, Danny Johnson, Dave Campos owned bike. I figured it would go for a max of $25,000. WRONG! It sold for $73.000. The old drag bikes are something motorcycle collectors want in their mix and are willing to pay big bucks for them. |

NICE PHOTO DICK, That was probably in 1971. Danny won the #1 plate in 1970 I believe. That was Danny's first Fuel bike, I believe, the bike I mentioned several pages back. He first raced it in '68. Am I right Boris. You built the frame. |

Don McAvoy was also one that was out every weekend, racing Rich Richards and his "lil Pam" at Colton and the "Dale". It was always nip&tuck 'tween the two. They are the two that got me hooked on racing my Triumph. It didn't take me very long to get up to their speeds. Eventually I got ahead of both, which earned me the trip to England in the first "drag safari" from the states. Perry&Scotts' double and Dick Rios' "two-timer" were also there,..got a lot of attention,. as soon as I got home I built my first Double. Put em both away the first summer in match-races. I was proud to be the victor, but sorry they 'hung it up' after that. They both had super neat bikes, but couldn't turn 160, and quit trying! I'm sorry 'bout that. Don McAvoy also built a double Triumph, - McAvoy was the man that taught me all I knew back then about using nitro, with benzol yet. We finally heard about P.O. ~ Boy, did things change ! I even tried hydrozine before that,-- a big mistake ! Don even tried mixing black gun-powder with his nitro,.. didn't work.-- During those early days Rich was the man to beat, on his "Lil Pam" Triumph. God Bless him. One time I rode Dons' Triumph at Santa Ana, there were no E.T. lights, just MPH. On a single run Don told me to slowly cross over into the other lane at half-track and go thru' the traps in the other lane. This gave more footage for the 1320 quarter, I went a few MPH faster of course,. a longer quarter ! Don would show Richie his time slips, gee!- musta been the lower altitude, huh ? One was always trying to out-do the other. ~ Of course, that's drag-racing ! ~~~ Boris

Yeah Frank, Danny got one of my 'shaky-flyer' frames and did do very well back east with it. Set records and won races,.. a year or so later I built his double Sportster frame. - He did fair with that I think for awhile. Then--- it was T.C. and Joe that finally took over the double ranks, ~~~ Boris

In response to the bike on Ebay, some of the facts are mixed up, but hey that was a long time ago.
If I remember right this bike was built & raced by Murray & Cook? in the 60's Bill Mesler purchased it from Mr. Murray and ran it at El Mirage and B-ville.
My dad, Ray Torrez (in front) and Mace Mesler (in back) with a bike that my dad and George Conboy built from a set of Mr. Murray's jigs. It had a 650 Triumph with a Rajay turbo. On it's first shake down run when the boost came on it spit the chain, which wrapped around the guard and embedded into my dads back. Note: This was the last time he wore two piece leathers. The bike ran consistantly at 176 in the mile at both the lakes and the salt. |

Boris and Joe, thanks for the input on the PO, I'll try it on a very used motor just in case. 1 oz to a gallon! wow that stuff must really be something. The fuel we use has roughly 8% oil, 30% nitro and the balance is alky. I'm assuming that since I can get away with a rich mixture and if it does all burn without detonating I should be making some part braking hp. Where do you suppose I can get some PO without them thinking I'm making some new recipe for cooking crystal meth?
